What do you get when a Parisian, a Pole, a Russian, an Englishman, a Greek, and a host of other dignitaries from the far corners of Europe set out on a journey to Reims for the coronation of Charles X? Well, you don't get very far down the road, I can tell you that! But in Rossini's fine hands, you do get an absolutely inspiring musical evening.
When their plans to attend the coronation of Charles X fall apart, this veritable U.N. delegation could have disintegrated into bickering and back-biting. Instead, they make the very best of the situation—much to audiences' delight. They may not get to Reims, but they take us to a place where different cultures can celebrate their national identities in boisterous fun and touching camaraderie.
